Description
(Oyster Merchant from the Surroundings of La Rochelle)
This print illustrates a female oyster merchant from the vicinity of La Rochelle, a coastal city in France known for its oyster cultivation. She is dressed in a traditional costume, likely reflecting her occupational and regional identity. The costume consists of a striped dress with a full skirt for ease of movement, a solid apron to protect her attire, and a large, distinctive bonnet that was typical of the region. She carries a yoke over her shoulders, from which two large baskets hang, presumably containing oysters, indicative of her trade. In her right hand, she holds what appears to be a weighing scale, a tool of her trade for selling oysters. The background includes a view of the sea and ships, placing her within the maritime culture of La Rochelle.
