Kalmouck. – Handcoloured plate of a Kalmyk man in traditional costume, with a spear and bow and arrows. Kalmyks is the name for the Oirats after they settled in Russia, specifically in Kalmykia.

‘Kalmouck.’

Handcoloured lithograph, heightened with Arabic gum on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 16,7 x 26,1 cm. (6,6 x 10,3 inch). Image size: 10 x 18 cm. (3,9 x 7,1 inch).

From the Asia volume of “Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde” by Auguste Wahlen. This was published in Paris: Poiree, Pilout, Duterte and Martinon, 1844.

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Auguste Wahlen’. Author: Auguste Wahlen. Various artists are responsible for the illustrations, most notably Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert and R. King.

Condition: Good, given age. Faintly browned, and with some small stains. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
