Fridericus DVX Saxonie Princeps Ector et Sacri – two medals commemmorating John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony (1503-1554), also called John the Magnanimous. He was the Head of the Protestant Confederation of Germany (the Shmalkaldic League), “Champion of the Reformation”. The rear of the medals is also shown, depicting coats of arms.

This print originates from Frans Van Mieris’ ‘Histori der Nederlandsche Vorsten Uit de Huijzen van Beijere, Borgonje en Oostenrijk’ (The Hague: Pieter de Hondt, 1732-35). This work contained a total of around 1000 depictions of similar coins and medals.
