This attractive print was published in part 11 from a series of 15 sketchbooks (manga) by Katsushika Hokusai (1760?1849) – “Katsushika Iichi iboku – Hokusai manga j?ichihen” (Hokusai’s legacy – Hokusai’s scetches vol. 11) – with 46 woodblock prints, including 10 diptychs – Japan – 1878 (Meiji period).
Made by ‘Katsushika Hokusai’ after own design. Katsushika Hokusai, known simply as Hokusai, (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Hokusai is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the internationally iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Subjects of the artworks include landscapes, flora and fauna, everyday life and the supernatural. The present print is a Manga but does not refer to contemporary Manga.The subjects in the series are not interconnected. The artworks are made with the woodblock technique in the three colors black, gray and pale flesh and consist of thousands of images in 15 parts. The first work of art was created in 1814, when the artist was 55 years old.
Condition: Good, given age. Upper right corner tear in paper been restored. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
