From: ‘Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren […]’ by Romeyn de Hooghe, edited by Arn. Henr. Westerhovius, published in Amsterdam by Joris van de Woude, 1735. This work was a well known emblem and source book for classical mythology and its iconography. The iconology in this work, a well used resource, deals with classical mythology and Christian symbolism and mixes the realism with esotericism, allegory and mythology. Text pages, describing the plates in detail (in Dutch), are included.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Romeyn de Hooghe’ after own design. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period.

Condition: Very good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
