Plate: ‘L’ Oiseaux-mouche a Longue Queue Noire – id. Violet a Queue Fourchue – id. a Collier ou Jacobine’. (Hummingbirds.) This delicate handcoloured engraving originates from: ‘Oeuvres completes de Buffon, avec la nomenclature Linneene et la classification de Cuvier.’ Published in Paris by Garnier Freres, Libraires, 6 Rue des Saint-Peres, 1853.Artists and Engravers: Author: Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (September 7, 1707 – April 16, 1788). French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon’s views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. This handcoloured engravings is by Oudet after Edouard Travies (1809-c1868) The minute precision of Edouard Travies’ work places him with the best of France’s scientific artists. his bird drawings are considered to be some of the finest ever produced.
Condition: Excellent. General age-related toning and occasional light stains from handling. Please study scan carefully.
