BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in Illustrated London News, December 20, 1856.

Reference: British Museum registration no. 1918,1010.131.

Biography engraver: George C. Leighton (1826-1895) led one of the most successful British chromolithographic firms of the mid-19th century. The Leighton Brothers were closely associated with the Illustrated London News.

Biography artist: Edward Duncan (1803-1882) was a British marine and landscape painter and illustrator, member of the Royal Society of Watercolours. He was known for delicate rural and coastal subjects.
