Plate LI: ‘Henry the First’. (Henry I.) This plate is after a medieval illuminated miniature. King Henry is bewailing the fatal end of his children who are represented below struggling in vain with with the tempest wherein they perished. This print is taken from ”The Regal and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of England’. This important work on English medieval history was Strutt’s first work. All the plates were drawn and engraved by himself. The work contains 72 sepia tinted copper engraved plates.Artists and Engravers: Joseph Strutt (1749-1810): English engraver, artist, antiquary and author, was born at Chelmsford in 1749. In 1770 he became a student of the Royal Academy, and in the following year secured both the gold and silver medals, the former for oil painting and the latter ‘for the best Academy figure’.
Condition: Very Good. General age related toning and light foxing as visible on the scan.
