Made by J. Ballin after an anonymous artist. John Ballin (1822-1885) was a Danish engraver. Ballin studied art at the Copenhagen Academy, under J. Lundk and Eckersberg. His first engravings were exhibited there in 1841. Ballin then moved to Germany and worked in Leipzig from 1846 to 1848. His fine style of engraving attracted attention throughout Europe and during the following years he was repeatedly commissioned by both London and Paris publishers. Ballin was elected to the Academy of Arts, Copenhagen, in 1877. He returned to Denmark in 1883 and founded a school of engraving there.
