Plate: ‘Vrienden-Eilanders.’ (Inhabitants of Friendly Islands, Polynesia.) Friendly islands or Tonga is an archipelago consisting of many islands including Tongotaboo, Eooa, Anamocka. This scarse engraved plate originates from: ‘De mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol beschreven door Martinus Suart, afgebeeld door Jacques Kuyper.’, 1st ed. in 6 parts, published by Johannes Allart, Amsterdam, 1802. This famous anthropological work was ‘the first Dutch treatise on geographical anthropology… Quite a few plates are after the travel accounts of Captain Cook, La Pérouse, Carver, Levaillant, etc…’ (Landwehr).Artists and Engravers: Author: Martinus Stuart (Dutch preacher, historian: 1765-1826). Engraved by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper.
