‘WIE EINER IMMER DANEBEN TRITT (FRONT), MEINE MUTZE ERLAUBEN MIR DAS NICHT (VERSO)’

– A political caricature depicting Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV as “Puss in Boots,” stumbling clumsily while attempting to follow in the footsteps of Frederick the Great. The king is illustrated as a foolish and intoxicated figure, holding a champagne bottle and goblet while failing to step into the precise footprints of his great-great-uncle. In the background, Sanssouci Palace is visible, reinforcing the satirical commentary on Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s unsuccessful attempts to position himself as a worthy successor to Frederick the Great. This lithograph, created by Heinrich Wilhelm Storck in 1842/1843, played a significant role in political discourse at the time, even leading to the abolition of press freedom for caricatures in Prussia in 1843. The verso of this print features a lithograph titled Meine Mutze erlauben mir das nicht, printed by J.G. Fritzsche. The left figure appears to be a reversed copy of the right-hand figure from Honore Daumier’s Eh bien! Vous voila capitaine de la garde nationale (1840), catalogued as Delteil no. 575, state iii/iii.
