From: ‘Luz da Liberal e Nobre Arte da Cavallaria’, by Manoel Carlos de Andrade, Lisbon, Regia Officina Typographica, 1790. This work on riding and horsemanship was the first book on the subject of this magnitude. Andrade (1755-1817) focusses on baroque and Iberian horse riding. The work is illustrated with engravings by Gaspar Frois Machado, Alegre Manuel (1768-1815) and others after drawings by Joachim Carneiro da Silva.

Made by ‘Froij = Gaspar Frois Machado’ after ‘Joachim Carneiro da Silva’. Gaspar Frois Machado (1731-1822) was one of Portugal’s foremost engravers, active in Portugal and the UK. Joachim Carneiro da Silva (1727-1818) was a Spanish painter.

Condition: Good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
