Inula helenium (Elecampane), from the large genus of ca. 90 flowering plants in the family Asteraceae.
Made by Lambert after Turpin.
Medium: Handcoloured stipple engraving. on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 12 x 20.4 cm (4.72 x 8.03 inch). Image size: 11 x 18 cm. (4.33 x 7.09 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Some discolouration and small spots in the margins. Small holes from binding. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This print originates from ‘Flore Medicale’, a French medical reference book with illustrations after Turpin. It was published by Panckoucke in 1828-1832.
Biography engraver: Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) is considered by many as the greatest French botanical painter of his time. His drawings of botanical details have rarely been surpassed. Turpin voyaged extensively in the Carribean and Southern United States. As curator of his Dictionary Turpin had some of the finest engravers work on his plates, which include etchings / engravings and stipple engravings. This plate is engraved by Lambert Jeune.
