Copperplate engraving on a vellin type hand laid paper with watermark. Original hand colouring. on paper.
Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 21.5 x 26.5 cm. The image size is ca. 18 x 19 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 8.5 x 10.4 inch. The image size is ca. 7.1 x 7.5 inch.
Plate: Afriquaines III. This plate shows various Africans: 1. Egypt – 2. Hottentots or Khoikhoi – 3/4. Negro’s or Kaffirs from southern en western Africa. Tekst /description page in Dutch included. This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder.’ (Transl.: picture book for children.), by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Plate titles are in Dutch. Age c. 1800.Artists and Engravers: Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch (1747-1822 German) was a German publisher and patron of the arts. Most plates engraved by Lehman fec.
Condition: Excellent given age. General age related toning and light staining. Paper edges a bit brownish and with occasional small tears and thumbing. Light crease in the middle but nothing serious. Please study scan.
