Lugduni Batavorum Apud Joannem van der Linden – Allegorical title page to the described work. It shows various classical personifications (such as time, genius), two angels carrying scrolls and books, a female figure writing while another female figure (holding a shield with Medusa’s head) looks over her shoulder. In the background a man is chiselling inscriptions into a stone pyramid. A portrait medallion at the top of Edwardus Simson (Edward Simpson (1578 – 1651) English historian and clergyman.

Made by Jan Wandelaar after an anonymous artist. Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759) was a Dutch painter, engraver and etcher, born in Amsterdam. Wandelaar was a pupil of Folkema, van der Gouwen and De Lairesse. In turn he would teach Lyonet and Delfos. His anatomical engravings (for Ruysch’ Opera and Albinus Tabulae) are the main base for his renown and highly esteemed. He died in Leyden.

Condition: Good, given age. Trimmed within the plate. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
