Antique print, untitled. The Battle of Castle Engelen (later fortified and called Crevecoeur) near ”s Hertogenbosch, 1587 (during the first decades of the eighty year war between Spain and the Low Countries). This plate shows a skirmish between the Count Hohenlo and Sir Hautepenne in 1587. This original antique print is one of the ‘Geschichtsblatter’ by Frans Hogenberg, published in Cologne, c. 1560-1623. First published in 1560 and continuously expanded account of the events in the Dutch war from the Dutch point of view.This particular print was also used in ‘De Leone Belgico’ by Aitzinger, but without the 12-line poem below. Ref: New Hollstein Dutch B239-1(2).Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Frans Hogenberg’ after an anonymous artist. Frans / Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) was a German / Flemish cartographer from Brabant. He drew maps for Dutch, German and English publishers. He was probably trained by his father-in-law, Hendrik Terbruggen.
Condition: Good, given age. Stain in middle of print and in left top. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
