Plate 86: ‘Een Monnik in een oproer te Konstantinopolen ‘t hoofd afgesneeden, en ‘t zelve op een Spies omgedraagen’ (The head of a monk severed and carried on a stake during an uprising in Constantinople). It shows: The severed head on a stake, being walked through town in an aggressive procession. This original engraving originates from ‘Tafereelen der eerste Christenen, bestaande in 92 konstprenten’ (Scenes of the first Christians, in 92 prints). This book was published in 1740 in Amsterdam by Gerrity de Groot and Jacobus Rijkhof. The prints by Luyken are accompanied by texts by P. Langendyk and C. Condition: Very good, given age. Original middle fold. Some general age-related toning and thumbing, please study scan carefully.
