BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published by Fran?ois Foppens (possibly) in Isaac Bullart’s “Academie des Sciences et Arts contenant les vies et eloges his. des hommes illustres qui ont excelle en ces professions depuis environ quatre siecles,” Brussels, 1682. The book was also published in Amsterdam in 1682 by the heirs of Daniel Elzevier. Each portrait is an illustration to the biography of an artist or scholar. Most of the portraits were made by Nicolas de Larmessin (162), 93 by De Boulonois and a third by unidentified printmakers. This is an illustration on p. 216, part II.

Biography engraver: Nicolas de Larmessin (1638-1694), a French engraver, known for producing fine portrait engravings of notable individuals during the 17th century.
