Stipple engraving with original hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper. Watermark: zie hiernaast.
Sheet size: 22 x 29 cm. (8,7 x 11,4 inch). Image size: 14,5 x 22,5 cm. (5,7 x 8,9 inch).

This decorative print originates from: ‘Afbeeldingen van de kleedingen, zeden en gewoonten in Holland (in de Bataafsche Republiek), met den aanvang der negentiende eeuw.’ (tranl.: Images of costume, morals and habits in the Netherlands, at the beginning of the 19th c.), by E. Maaskamp, published in Amsterdam, 1811. The first 16 plates of this work were originally published in five installments from 1803 to 1807 titled: ‘Afbeeldingen van kleeding, zeden en gewoonten in de Bataafsche Republiek…’ The accompanying texts as well as the captions on the originally 16 plates were in Dutch and in French. Re-editions appeared in (1808) and in 1811 with 4 additional plates (Nrs. 17-20). An English edition with the same plates with the Dutch/French captions was published by Maaskamp in 1808. Another edition with English texts was printed by J. Barfield in London for Colnaghi & Co, also in London in 1810. These 1808-1811 editions have both the addresses of Maaskamp and Colnaghi engraved on the plates, except for plate 1 which has the address of Maaskamp only.

Made by ‘Louis Portman’ after ‘Jacques Kuyper ao’. The publisher is Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834). Engraved by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper ao. This plate after Jacques Kuyper. The plates are coloured finely by hand by the famous Dutch painter Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853). idem
