Medium: Handcoloured proof etching / engraving. on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 46.3 x 40.2 cm (18.23 x 15.83 inch). Image size: 43.5 x 37.5 cm. (17.13 x 14.76 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing. Light ghosting from previous matting. Remains of tape on rear from previous attachment. Top paper edge a bit chipped with slight paper loss. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Separately published proof of a master print, ca. 1784.

Biography engraver: John Keyse Sherwin (1751-1790) was a British engraver who trained under Bartolozzi. Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1797) was an influential British eighteenth century painter, specialising in portraits and promoting the ‘Grand Style’, which depends on idealization of the imperfect.
