Made by ‘Schuster’ after ‘Daniel Chodowiecki’. Daniel Nikjlaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801) was a Polish-German painter and printmaker of Huguenot ancestry. He is most famous as an etcher, and is credited with inventing the ‘remarque’, a small marginal doodle often not intended to be printed in the print for publication. Chodowiecki, however, often did include them, as a bonus for collectors. Publisher: Johann Bernard Basedow (1724-1790), famous pedagogue and follower of Rousseau, founder also of the so-called Philantropinum at Dessau, where the new enlightened views on education were put into practice. In 1770 Basedow had published his first “Elementarbuch”.
