BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From “Phytanthoza Iconographia,” a renowned botanical work, published between 1737-1745 by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) was a notable German pharmacist, botanist, and engraver, famous for his “Phytanthoza Iconographia,” which showcased botanical subjects with innovative printing techniques. Johann Weinmann directed a famous pharmacy in Regensburg. The Phytanthoza Iconographia was his masterpiece, a huge work in eight folio volumes which provided one of the most comprehensive botanical references of the eighteenth century. Great Flower Books describes it as a ‘pioneering work of botanical prints’ and it remains today one of the most ambitious works ever undertaken, displaying over 4,000 species. Particularly magnificent are the tulips, iris, exotic palms and pineapples, cactus, fruit & vegetables.
Biography engraver: Johann Jacob Haid or Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver who worked in Augsburg. Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767) was a German painter, engraver, draughtsman and publisher. He is considered one of the most famous German engravers of animals, particularly horses, hounds and hunting scenes. Bartholomew Seuter (1678-1754) was a German engraver, who was also active in Augsburg.
Biography artist: Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) was a German botanist and entomologist known for his botanical illustrations.
