The fortress on the Gamboa river From: “A Description of the Coasts of North and South Guinea […]”, by John Barbot, published in London by Awnsham and John Churchill, 1732. This work was published as the fifth volume of Awnsham and John Churchill’s six-volume “Collection of Voyages and Travels […]” Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Johannes Kip’ after ‘John Barbot’. Johannes Kip (1653-1722). Dutch draughtsman, engraver and dealer, active in England. He was a pupil of Bastiaen Stopendaal (1636–1707) from 1668 to 1670. Author: John Barbot, Frenchman, was an agent-general of the Royal Company of Africa, the major French trading company on the west coast in the late 17th century. He made many trading voyages along the Ivory, Gold and Slave Coasts of Western Africa. His Description was considered a valuable merchant’s reference book at the time of its publication, detailing trade opportunities and African commercial practices, but the work also presents much of cultural interest, describing the customs, dress, governments and religions of the people he encountered. Today Barbot’s work is often cited for its detailed and compelling descriptions of slavery in Western Africa. He observes slavery from a trader’s view and describes the process of the slave sales. Barbot made his last journey to Guinea in 1682. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 the protestant Barbot fled to England where he died in Southampton in 1712.

Condition: Very good, given age. Original folds as issued. Tear in lower part of print, extending 15 cm into image and tear in top margin, extending 3 cm into image, backed by contemporary paper and consolidated with acid free tape. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
