This attractive print originates from: ‘Hortus Nitidissimus’, by Christoph Trew (1695-1769) and C.G. von Murr (1733-1811), published in Nuremburg, from 1750-1786. This was one of the greatest 18th century flowerbooks, with 119 plates in 2 vol..
Made by ‘Johann Michael Seligmann’ after ‘Georg Ehret’. Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762) was a German artist and engraver best known for his ornithological artwork in Sammlung verschiedener auslandischer und seltener Vogel (Collection of various foreign and rare birds) which included plates based on the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. Seligmann received his initial training in engraving and art at the Nurnberger Malerakademie and some of his earlier works included the depictions of various rocks and minerals. His other works included the Opera Botanica 1754 written Konrad Gesner. Many of the copper plates that he made bear the initials JMS. Georg Dionysius Ehret (German; 1708-1770) was one of the most influential botanical artists of all time.
Condition: Good, given age. A few very small tears in left paper edge, backed. In upper area two larger tears in paper edges which are backed. Some remains of paper tape on rear from attachment. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
