– Original antique print illustrating a biblical scene from the New Testament, Matthew 26; , The Jewish high priest Caiaphas leads an illegal, midnight trial against Jesus. When Jesus confirms he is the Messiah (the chosen savior) and the Son of God, Caiaphas tears his clothes in anger. The religious leaders falsely declare Jesus guilty of blasphemy and sentence him to death.

Biography engraver: Dirk Jongman, 18th century Dutch engraver.

Biography artist: Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French painter and engraver. He received his art education from his father, Etienne (1632-1721), from Le Brun and Jouvenet at the Royal Academy. His talents developed rapidly: at the age of sixteen he gained honors at the Academy of Paris. His prints in the ‘French’ taste were very popular. His way of working was also very influential for the book illustration in the Netherlands. Pieter de Hondt, Dutch publisher and bookseller (1696–1764).
