Breaking deep social taboos, he asks her for water and offers her “living water”—a symbol of eternal salvation. She then recognizes him as a prophet and the Messiah.

Biography artist: Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) was a painter, engraver and writer from Dordrecht. He was s student of Willem Drillenbrug, Jacob de Vecq and Samual van Hoogstraeten. Pieter de Hondt, Dutch publisher and bookseller (1696–1764).
