‘CHRIST SENT BACK TO PILATE (..).’

– Original antique print illustrating a biblical scene from the New Testament, Luke 23; When the Jewish leaders accuse Jesus, Governor Pontius Pilate finds no reason to kill Him. Learning Jesus is from Galilee, Pilate sends Him to King Herod, who happens to be in Jerusalem. Herod mocks Jesus and sends Him back to Pilate, setting up Pilate’s ultimate choice.

Biography engraver: Andries van Buysen, Dutch engraver and etcher (1674–1747).

Biography artist: Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French painter and engraver. He received his art education from his father, Etienne (1632-1721), from Le Brun and Jouvenet at the Royal Academy. His talents developed rapidly: at the age of sixteen he gained honors at the Academy of Paris. His prints in the ‘French’ taste were very popular. His way of working was also very influential for the book illustration in the Netherlands. Pieter de Hondt, Dutch publisher and bookseller (1696–1764).
