– Original antique print showing the siege of Valenciennes, North of France on the 24th of march 1567. The city is situated at the Schelde. The city is recaptured by Mr. Noircarmes of the Calvinists. View from the camp of the army of Noircarmes. Residents of the city have Noircarmes kneeling on the keys of the city. For the city of advancing troops and skirmishes. At the top a band bearing the title and legend AQ in Latijn. Scene from the Eighty Years’ War.

Medium: Etching on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 43 x 31.7 cm (16.93 x 12.48 inch). Image size: 41.6 x 29 cm. (16.38 x 11.42 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Original fold as issued. Several brown spots but mainly visible on verso. Small tear at bottom middle fold. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

This rare antique print originates from: ‘Romani e Societate Iesv De bello Belgico.’, published by Franciscus Corbeletti in Rome 1640.

Biography engraver: Johann Wilhelm Baur, Joan Guiliam Bouwer, or Bauer (Strasbourg, 31 May 1607 – Vienna, 1 January 1640) was a German engraver, etcher and miniature painter. He is famous for a series of illustrations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

Biography artist: Famiano Strada (1572 ? 6 September 1649) was an Italian Jesuit and historian of wars in the low countries (Belgium and Netherlands) during the early part of the Eighty Years’ War, starting with the abdication of Charles V in 1556 to the capture of Rheinsberg in 30 January 1590.
