BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Delicate copperplate engravings from the very scarce bound collection of engravings representing the works of Francis van Bossuit, a famous ivory sculptor: ‘Cabinet de l’art de sculpture, par le fameux sculpteur Francis van Bossuit. Execut? en ivoire, ou ebouch? en terre, grav?es d’apres les desseins de Barent Graat, par Mattys Pool’, Amsterdam 1727. Mythology scene. The engravings were made by Mattys Pool (1676-1727) after the drawings by the Dutch painter Barent Graat (1628-1709).

Biography engraver: Matthijs Pool (1676-1732), born in March 1676 in Amsterdam, was a prominent Dutch printmaker, publisher, and art dealer during the Dutch Republic era. Known for his extensive work as an artist, draughtsman, engraver, etcher, mezzotinter, and copper engraver, Pool’s career flourished around 1716. His professional activities spanned various locales, including Amsterdam from 1696 to 1740 and a brief period in France in 1700. Pool was deeply embedded in the art world not only as a creator but also as a collector and dealer, contributing significantly to the cultural tapestry of his time until his death in Amsterdam in 1732.

Biography artist: Francis van Bossuit (1635 -1692): famous Flemmish sculptor . He was born in Brussels in 1635. Already early in his life he went to Italy where he soon became famous for his ivory carvings of antique statues. In1675 he went to Amsterdam together with Bonaventura van Overbeke (1660-1706).
