Subject: Antique print, titled: ‘Arlequin Toovenaar en Barbier – Arlequin Magicien & Barbier […].’ – Antique print showing Arlequin, the magician and barber. Belloardo en Capitano are being shaved by Arlequin who is dressed as a barber. Arlequin has a hidden bat under his arm with which he is going to club his rivals Belloardo en Capitano. Condition: Good, given age. A few crinkles and soft creases, mainly in the margins. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Description: This plate was later published as part of: ‘Tafereelen uit het burgelijke leven van de Hollanders in de achttiende eeuw door Cornelis Troost.’, (Transl.: Scenes from the daily life of the citizens of Holland in the 18th c. by Cornelis Troost.), published by P. Fouquet c. 1750. This magnificent and very scarse series of 32 scenes show satiric views in Holland, part of present day The Netherlands. State: First state of 2. Ref: Niemeijer 708T/VerHuell XXXIII.
Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Pieter Tanje’ after ‘Cornelis Troost’. Pieter Tanje (1706-1761) was an 18th century Dutch engraver from the Northern Netherlands. He specialised in highly finished book illustrations. Cornelis Troost (1696-1750) was an 18th-century actor and painter from Amsterdam. He gave up his acting career for painting in 1723 when he became the pupil of Arnold Boonen.
