Medium: Engraving / etching on handlaid (verge) paper. Watermark: A. van Santen.

Sheet size: 24.8 x 26.6 cm (9.76 x 10.47 inch). Image size: 13.2 x 19.2 cm. (5.2 x 7.56 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Brownish. Creases. Smudges. Tiny tears restored. Small holes from binding. Double fold because of binding. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print was first published by Theodore Galle (c.1570-1633). This is a later ed., ca 1750.

Biography engraver: Johannes Collaert II (c.1561-c.1620) was an engraver, not publisher, active in Antwerp; younger son of Hans Collaert I. From the 1580 engraved prints for Phillip’s Galle print publishing house, together with his brother.

Biography artist: Johannes Stradanus (Dutch Jan van der Straet) (1523 ? 2 November 1605) was a Flemish artist active mainly in 16th-century Florence, Italy. He was a wide-ranging talent who worked as an easel and fresco painter, designer of tapestries, draughtsman, designer of prints and pottery decorator. His subject range was varied and included history subjects, mythological scenes, allegories, landscapes, genre scenes, portraits, architectural scenes and animals.
