Het beleg van Alkmaar. – This print shows a representation of the siege of Alkmaar and Haarlem during the 80-year war by the Spanish. An image of the fortified city of Alkmaar seen from a hill, which is bombarded from all sides by various troops, including Don Ferdinand. In the foreground we see troops led by a figure on horseback, assisted by monks and many knights with Spanish helmets. In the foreground on the left we see the village of Oudtdorp where Don Frederik’s camp has been knocked down. On the top left we see the Schermermeer with ships and many cannons that shell the city gates of Alkmaar. Behind this many troops of Everstein and Fransbergh. On the horizon we see various church towers from Egmond, among others. At the bottom of the engraving is a description; linked with 15 numbers on the print. In the middle we see a description of a Spanish storm bridge that was used during the storming.

This attractive original old antique print / plate was published in several works by Hugo de Groot (‘Nederlandtsche Jaerboeken’ published in 1681.), P.C. Hooft (‘Nederlandsche Historien …’, published 1703-1704.), P.C. Bor (‘Oorsprongk, begin, en vervolgh der Nederlandsche oorlogen’, published in 1680.)or Jean Le Clerc. This print originates from: ‘Histoire des Provinces-Unies des Pays Bas…’, or ‘Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden…’ by Jean Le Clerc, 1723-1728 or 1730.

Made by ‘Coenraet Decker’ after ‘(Publisher Jean Le Clerc)’. Coenraet Decker (1650-1685). The author of this work is Jean Le Clerc / Joannes Clericus (1657-1736). From Hugenot origin, he studied filosophy, hebrew and theology in Geneva and travelled in Europe. He objected the calvinistic orthodoxie and influenced by Grotius, Episcopius, Van Limborch and others, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a Remonstrant. He became a professor at the Remonstrant seminary, a writer and publisher.

Condition: Good, given age. Centre fold as published. Some brown spots in margin. Brownish edge of the margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
