Plate: ‘ The death of Hercules.’ (Plate is accompanied by text in French, English, German and Dutch under image.) To regain Hercules’s love, Iole soaked his tunic in the Centaur’s blood. Upon putting it on, Hercules felt himself devoured by inner fire. Maddened with deadly pain he tore up surrounding pine trees by the roots and made his own funeral pyre. At his request Poeas, father of Philoctes, set it on fire. When the flames reached Hercules’s body, a cloud descended from the skies. Surrounded by thunder and lightening, Hercules disappeared from sight. He had risen to Olympus as an immortal. This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: ‘Tafereel, of Beschryving van den prachtigen Tempel der Zang-Godinnen.’ (Translation from Dutch: Scene or description of the magnificent temple of singing godesses.), by Bernard Picart Le Romain and published by H. Chatelain in Amsterdam, 1733. This is the first edition of this beautiful work, which took three years to complete, is a highlight of 18th century Dutch book illustration.
