Medium: Etching and engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 43.7 x 34.4 cm (17.2 x 13.54 inch). Image size: 24.2 x 20 cm. (9.53 x 7.87 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light creasing, foxing and soiling. Trimmed to the plate. Large tear at top middle, backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Scene from the play Julius Caesar and Cato. Published by Johannes Smit, Amsterdam. Part of the Schouwburg on the Keizersgracht series (1637-1772).

State: Full theatre interior with verse.

Reference: FMH 4264a; Rijksmuseum KOG-ZG-1-17B-46.

Biography engraver: Caspar Jacobsz Philips (1732-1789), was an 18th-century engraver and architectural historian of the Dutch Republic.

Biography artist: Pieter Antonsz Barbiers (1717-1780) was a Dutch artist. He was born and died in Amsterdam. He painted scenery for the theaters in Amsterdam, Leiden, and other cities. Another picture representing the conflagration of the former in the year 1772 has been engraved by C. Bagerts. His sons Bartholomeus Barbiers and Pieter Pietersz Barbiers were also painters.
