BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Dominicus Custos (c. 1560-1615) was a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Augsburg, known for his engraved portrait series of emperors, scholars, and nobles. His Atrium Heroicum is a landmark collection of early modern portraiture. As both engraver and publisher, Dominicus Custos created Atrium Heroicum to honor notable figures of the 16th century, blending humanist ideals and fine portrait engraving.
