Subject: Antique print, titled: ‘De Wanhebbelyke Liefde. L’ Amour mal Assorti’, (Undesired Love) An old man courting a young lady. The title refers to a play with the same title, translated from French by Rederijkerskamer Nil Nolentibus Arduum, in which the author argues that no good can come from a union between two people with a large age difference.
Condition: Very good, given age. Margins a little soiled. A pinprick in the right image edge. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
Medium: Stipple and line engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Artists and Engravers: P. Tanjé after C. Troost. Cornelis Troost (1696-1750) was an actor and painter from Amsterdam. He was trained as an actor, but gave up this career for painting in 1723. Pieter Tanje (1706-1761) was an engraver from the Northern Netherlands, born in Bolsward. His engraving skill was discovered through engraved snuff boxzes which he made in his free time while he was a shipmate on a service from Bolsward to Amsterdam. Jacob Folkema encouraged him to join the Stadsacademie of Amsterdam where he became a pupil of Bernard Picart, Houbraken, Troost and Jacob de Wit.
