– Allegorical Baroque composition of Saint Matthew the Evangelist seated with an angel guiding him. He holds a scroll inscribed with Latin text. Around him symbolic elements including a winged angel, dragon, globe, book, and ornamental cartouche. Dramatic clouds and elaborate rococo framing surround the scene.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in Augsburg (A.V. = Augusta Vindelicorum) by Goz and Klauber, with Imperial privilege.

Biography engraver: Johann Andreas Goz (1697-1764) was a German engraver and publisher active in Augsburg. He collaborated with the Klauber workshop, one of the most important engraving dynasties in 18th-century Augsburg. The Klaubers produced numerous devotional and ornamental engravings distributed throughout Catholic Europe, often bearing Imperial privilege.
