BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Based on a painting by Rembrandt dated 1655, in the Buccleuch Collection, Drumlanrig.

Biography engraver: James McArdell (c. 1729-1765) was a renowned Irish mezzotint engraver active in London. He is known for his highly refined mezzotints after works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and Reynolds.

Biography artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and etcher, considered one of the greatest visual artists in art history and the most important in Dutch art history. His works are celebrated for their rich detail, deep humanity, and masterful use of light and shadow.
