This print shows a view on Ecco homo which is Latin and means “Behold the man”. According to John 19:5 in the Vulgate, the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate said this when he showed Jesus to the Jewish people. Shortly before, he had had Jesus scourged and the Roman soldiers had dressed Jesus in a crown of thorns, mocking cloak and royal attributes. This scene belongs to the story of the trial of Jesus. Made by an anonymous engraver after Albrecht Durer.

Medium: Engraving / etching on hand laid (verge) paper.

Condition: good, given age. Small margins. Brown spots. Minor defects in upper corners. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This print was first published 1512, dated in the plate. This print is from ca 1600.

Biography engraver: Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was a German painter, draughtsman, maker of woodcuts and copper engravings, art theorist and humanist of the Northern Renaissance. The rise of printmaking, which runs parallel to the development of printing, makes Albrecht D?rer the most popular and influential Northern European artist of this period. His studio specialized in printing techniques. Copper engraving in particular made a large edition possible.
