Medium: Etching and stipple engraving on hand-laid (verge) paper.

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. Attached to a wove carrier sheet. With a few small tears at top, right and left top, all backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Based on “La Nouvelle Heloise” by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, originally published in 1761. Print published in Paris in 1795 by Depeuille.

Biography engraver: Augustin Le Grand (1765-1815) was a French engraver known for his literary and historical engravings.

Biography artist: Jean Frederic Schall (1752-1825) was a French painter and engraver renowned for his delicate and romantic compositions.
