This print shows Poseidon, the Greek God of the sea, on a shell-ship pulled along by seahorses. Alongside we see mermaids with musical instruments and dragon like creatures. On a cloud in a chariot pulled along by peacocks a goddess pointing her finger.

Description

Etching on hand laid, (verge) paper. Watermark: Double circle with lily and monogram A N (Italian paper).

Sheet size: 28,3 x 19,5 cm. (11,1 x 7,7 inch). Image size: 27,5 x 18,8 cm. (10,8 x 7,4 inch).

Attributed to Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi after own design. Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, named Il Bolognese (1606-1680) was an Italian painter, draftsman, graphic artist and architect. He was an accomplished fresco painter of classical landscapes popular with prominent Roman families.

This print was published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, around 1660.

Condition: Good, given age. Small tear in lower left and slight paper loss in top left corner margin. Trimmed at or within plate mark. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
