– Portrait of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel and Alathea Talbot, Countess of Arundel. The Earl seated at right behind a globe, wearing the collar of the Order of the Garter, holding a baton in his left hand and with his right pointing to Madagascar on the globe, the Countess seated at left and wearing a tiara and an ermine robe, holding a pair of calipers. Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel KG, (1585-1646) was an English peer, diplomat and courtier during the reigns of King James I and King Charles I, but he made his name as a Grand Tourist and art collector rather than as a politician.

Condition: good, given age. Remains of tape from previous attachment on rear. A few tiny tears in the paper edges. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Biography engraver: Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675) was a Flemish printmaker /painter / draughtsman and publisher / printer from Antwerp. He is considered the best engraver in Rubens school; broke with Rubens mid 1622 and left the latter’s studio. Came to London in 1624; returned to Antwerp via Paris in 1630; went blind in 1650s. He was the teacher of Paulus Pontius, Martinus van der Goes and Hans Witdoeck; father of Lucas Vorsterman II (q.v.). .

Biography artist: Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after enjoying great succes in Italy and Flanders.
