Philippus de Champaigne Bruxellensis … – Portrait of Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674), a reknown Baroque style Belgian painter of the French school. He was a pupil of the landscape painter Jacques Fouquieres. He moved to Paris early on and worked under the direction of his protector Nicolas Duchesne with Nicolas Poussin on the decoration of the Palais du Luxembourg. He became a court painter for Maria de Medici and worked for Cardinal de Richelieu.

Made by ‘Gerard Edelinck’ after ‘Philippe de Champaigne’. Gerard Edelinck / Edelink (1640-1707) was a Flemish engraver from Antwerp. He mostly worked in Paris, where he built a great reputation. He was a student of Jasper Huberti and Cornelis Galle in Antwerp and worked with Poilly and Nanteuil in Paris. He became engraver to the King and later a member of the Academy in 1677.

Condition: Good, given age. Light soiling. Trimmed at the plate mark. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
