Description
View of the mill at Montmartre with Polichinelle from Rome, Pierrot from Naples and Harlequin from Bergamo, seated on their asses / donkeys. The visual joke ‘We are Seven’, in which the viewer makes up the number of foolish persons, was popular throughout Europe from at least the 16th century.
Made by an anonymous engraver after Basset.
Medium: Etching and engraving, with original hand colouring on hand-laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Fragment of watermark with “AGT” lettering.

Condition: good, given age. Ghosting from previous matting, browning, foxing, and paper remnants on the rear from attachment; otherwise intact with vibrant coloring. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
