‘IN CARTOUCHE: “PHILIPPVS COMINAEVS FLANDER EQVES.”‘

– Fine line engraving depicting Philippe de Comines (1447-1511), the noted Burgundian and French diplomat, historian, and writer. He is shown in strict profile, emphasizing his intellectual and humanist character in a manner reminiscent of Renaissance medallic portraiture. His garment is decorated with scallop shells, relating to his coat of arms. Likely produced in the early eighteenth century after an earlier model, the print reflects continued interest in Renaissance statesmen during the Enlightenment.
