– Etching/engraving depicting Slot Persijn in Wassenaar, with moat and drawbridge. Figures in the foreground include walkers, a horse rider, and a horse-drawn carriage approaching the castle. A stork’s nest is visible on one of the towers. The view is framed by an ornate oak-leaf border with a title banner at the top.

Medium: Etching and engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Unclear lettering with VD.

Condition: very good, given age. Clean and strong impression. Minimal toning, trimmed margins. Remains of tape on rear from attachment. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Originally issued as part of the border decoration of the figurative map of The Hague (1681-1682), later published in La Galerie Agreable du Monde, Pieter van der Aa, Leiden, 1728.

Provenance: Ex. Collection Laurentius.

Biography engraver: Cornelis Elandts (active 1663-c.1681) was a Dutch etcher, mapmaker, and land surveyor based in The Hague. He is known for his contribution to the 1681-1682 figurative wall map of The Hague and other finely detailed topographical works.
