Dramatic kabuki confrontation scene: Otani Monzō as Heiji Kagetaka standing over Onoe Kikugorō as Hanshichi, who is seated and partially undressed. The standing figure grips the other’s topknot in a moment of intense theatrical action. Strong expressive mie pose and early Bunka-era draftsmanship typical of Kunisada’s 1820s yakusha-e. Biography engraver: Utagawa Kunisada I (1786-1864), also known as Toyokuni III, was one of the most prolific and commercially successful designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in Edo. A pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni I, he became the leading master of the Utagawa school and specialized in kabuki actor prints (yakusha-e), bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), and illustrated books. His vibrant color prints and refined line work made him one of the dominant figures of 19th-century Japanese printmaking.
