‘BELOW IMAGE: “NICOLAS LE FEVRE”. LOWER RIGHT: “EDELINCK SCULP. C.P.R.”‘

– Refined oval portrait of Nicolas le Fevre (1615-1669), also known as Nicasius le Febure, a French-born chemist, alchemist, and apothecary who worked in England. He is shown half-length, facing slightly left, wearing a buttoned doublet and white collar. The portrait is set within a double oval frame with a small cartouche beneath. The engraving is executed with great precision and tonal subtlety, characteristic of Gerard Edelinck’s work, capturing both the intellectual presence and status of the sitter, who served as chemist to Charles II and was associated with early scientific circles including the Royal Society.
