Engraving of Neptune (Poseidon) standing in a niche holding a trident in his right hand and reeds or seaweed in his left. Based on frescoes by Polidoro da Caravaggio, which were studied and adapted by Goltzius during his time in Rome.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Condition: very good, given age. Light soiling and creasing. Left margin with some thin paper spots and a small tear at the plate mark. Old fold lines. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Frescoes on the fa?ade of a Roman house (now lost), created c. 1522-1527 by Polidoro da Caravaggio.

Reference: Hollstein Dutch 297-2(4), The Illustrated Bartsch 250-2(4).

Biography engraver: Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617), Dutch Mannerist engraver known for his detailed and masterful works.

Biography artist: Polidoro da Caravaggio (1499-1543), an Italian painter influenced by Raphael, specializing in frescoes.
