BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: ‘Voyage Pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phenicie, de la Palestine et de la Basse Egypte’ (Paris, ca. 1799-1800), Vol. 3, plate 66.

Reference: Brunet I, 1616; Ebert 3636; Thieme/Becker VI, 126; Graesse II, 62.

Biography engraver: M.A. Benoist (active late 18th?early 19th century), French engraver known for his work on architectural and travel illustration plates after Cassas and other contemporaries.

Biography artist: Louis-Francois Cassas (1756-1827), French artist, architect, and antiquarian. His travels through the Levant and Egypt resulted in numerous detailed drawings of ancient and Islamic architecture, published in his Voyage Pittoresque.
